The New GNO Building at the SNFCC

In 2016, the Greek National Opera is anticipated to be relocating to its new facilities at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. The new building, covering an area of 28,000 sq m, will be an architectural jewel designed to promote the opera experience for both the public and the artists. Its superb acoustics, technological capabilities, flexibility in changing scenery and aesthetics will classify the new building among the top opera houses in the world. The new building of the Greek National Opera will be a multi-functional space, suited for hosting a wide variety of artistic performances and events. Its stages will be available for opera and ballet productions, children's shows, musical concerts, theater performances and multimedia art projects.

Construction has been underway since October 2012. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center represents the largest single donation made by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation which is fully financing the center's construction and equipment with a gift of € 566,000,000. Apart from the GNO facilities, the SNFCC will also comprise the new state-of-the-art facilities of the National Library of Greece, as well as the Stavros Niarchos Park over an area of 17 hectares. Upon its completion, the SNFCC will be delivered as a gift to the Greek State, which will exclusively assume its management and operation. Designed by internationally renowned architect Renzo Piano and his architecture firm, the SNFCC is a project of utmost national significance with considerable reformative prospects .

The transfer of the Greek National Opera to its new facilities turns the page to a new, brilliant era in the history of the country's only opera house.
