Carlos Almaguer

Soloist, Baritone
He was born in Mexico. From a young age, he learned how to play various musical instruments and started taking singing lessons (Francesco Amador). At the age of eighteen, he came in third at the singing contest for young opera singers “Carlo Morelli” in Mexico and the following year (1994) he won the competition. After winning a scholarship, he continued his studies with Carlo Bergonzi at the Sienna Academy and with Vicente Sardinero in Madrid (1996-2003) and won numerous prizes in international competitions, such as the first prize at the Verviers International Singing Competition (Belgium, 1997). In 1999, he made his first appearance at the Frankfurt Opera as Alfio in Rustic Chivalry [Cavalleria rusticana]. He has performed at leading opera houses and international festivals in Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy, England, France, China, USA, Israel, Australia, etc. He has interpreted all major baritone roles of Verdi’s operas, including Rigoletto, Don Carlo [The Power of Fate/La forza del destino], Amonasro [Aida], Renato [A Masked Ball/Un ballo in maschera], Il conte di Luna [The Troubadour/Il trovatore], Ezio [Attila], Simon Boccanegra, Macbeth, Jago [Ernani], as well as in other Italian operas, including: Andrea Chenier, Tosca, Pagliacci, Luisa Miller, The Girl of the West [La fanciulla del West]. For the GNO he interpreted: the title role in Rigoletto during the 2008/09 and 2009/10 season0; the role of Alfio in the opera Rustic Chivalry [Cavalleria rusticana] and of Tonio in the opera Pagliacci, both of which were staged at the Herodeion in 2011 in the context of the Athens Festival; and the role of Guido di Montforte in the operas I vespri siciliani [Les vêpres siciliennes] (2012/13, Athens Concert Hall) and Rigoletto (2013/14).
