George Aravidis

Conductor
He was born in Athens in 1965. He studied piano and advanced theory at the National Conservatory of Athens, graduating with honors (unanimously) and with distinction. He continued studying orchestral conducting at the National School of Music in France [Normale Supérieure de Musique de Paris] and graduated with first distinction in 1990. He took Master Classes for orchestral conducting under Richard Schumacher (Switzerland) and Yuri Simonov (Hungary) and for choral conducting under Peter Erdei (Hungary). He began his career in Paris, conducting and –in parallel– recording works of new French composers in first executions with ballet and cinema music. He directed the North Hungarian Symphony Orchestra and the Naples Youth Orchestra. In Greece he conducted for the first time the Thessaloniki State Orchestra in 1986. Ever since he has conducted all Greek orchestras. Since 1995 he collaborates regularly with the GNO. He has conducted many times the Contemporary Music Orchestra of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT). He has recorded for the Third Program of the Greek Radio and he has collaborated in productions in the Concert Halls of Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as the Herodeon. He taught and conducted productions at the GNO Opera Studio. He founded the Athens Chamber Orchestra, with which he regularly gives concerts, while ever since 1994 he is a permanent conductor of the Athens Chamber Opera. At the same time, he works in opera productions with the Lyric Theatre Polyhymnia, he composes, he has been a member of the Examination Committee of the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) and of various music competitions. He teaches orchestral conducting at the National Conservatory, and he was a founding member and director of the Conservatories’ Orchestra (1992-1996). Since 2003 he is the director of studies of the Greek Conservatory of Northern Suburbs and the head of studies of the National Conservatory in Greece and Cyprus.
