Azerbaijani baritone, he is a star soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where he has sung numerous leading roles, including Escamillo (Carmen), Giorgio Germont (La traviata), Rodrigo (Don Carlo), Renato (Un ballo in maschera), Lescaut (Manon Lescaut), Count Tomsky (The Queen of Spades) as well as the leading roles in Mazeppa by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Prince Igor. Other recent performances include Abimelech (Samson et Dalila) and Ibn-Hakia (Iolanta) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Scarpia (Tosca) conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin at the Bravo! Vail Music Festival, Macbeth at the Verdi Festival of the Opéra national de Lyon, Count di Luna (Il trovatore) at the Opéra de Limoges, Amonasro (Aida) at the Teatro Municipal de Santiago and Gryaznoy (The Tsar’s Bride) at the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden, London). In 2018 Azizov was awarded the title of People’s Artist of Azerbaijan.
