Lando Bartolini

He was born in Casale, Prato (Italy) on 11/4/1937. After winning the Mario Lanza award in 1968 he studied at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia with Nikos Moschonas. In 1973 he debuted in the title roles of Mascagni’s Iris at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and Cavalleria rusticana (Turiddu) at the New York City Opera, where he appeared extensively for the next few years, also becoming a naturalized American. In 1982/83 he appeared at La Scala in the title roles of Ernani and Il tabaro. He soon received invitations from the greatest opera theaters in Europe (Vienna, Paris, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, Royal Opera House in London, Arena di Verona e.t.c.), the USA (Metropolitan Opera of New York, Chicago Lyric Opera e.t.c.) and South America. From 1988 onwards he sang regularly at the MET Radamès [Aida], Manrico (Il trovatore), Chénier (Andrea Chénier). His repertoire includes, among other things, the following dramatic tenor roles: Manrico, Radamès, Don Alvaro (La forza del destino), Dick Johnson (La Fanciulla del West), Pollione (Norma) as well as Turiddu (Cavalleria rusticana), Canio (Pagliacci) and Calaf (Turandot), his most important role, sang by Bartolini more than 200 times in 30 different international productions, including those of Beijing (1999) and Athens (2003, Athens Concert Hall). Bartolini has recorded extensively works such as Zandonai’s I Cavalieri di Ekebω, Respighi’s Semirama and Puccini’s Turandot. He also appeared at the Greek National Opera during the season 1997-1998 singing Don Alvaro (La Forza del destino).
