Ly Betzou

Soloist, Soprano
She was born in Gemany in early 20th century. She debuted in 1933-34, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. From 1934 to 1938, she was a member of the Breslau Opera [Opernhaus von Breslau], and subsequently she sang at other theaters in Germany and Vienna (State Opera, People's Opera). Her career apparently ended prematurely, since the last mention of a performance by her is at the Graz Theater [Theater von Graz] in 1940-1941. Still, she was able to sing numerous roles, such as Rezia [Oberon], Irene [Rienzi], Chrysothemis [Elektra], Ariadne [Ariadne auf Naxos], the Empress [The Woman without a Shadow/Die Frau ohne Schatten], Leonora [Il trovatore], Amelia [A Masked Ball/Un ballo in maschera], Donna Leonora [The Force of Destiny/La forza del destino], Santuzza [Cavalleria rusticana], Tosca [Tosca], Minnie [The Girl of the West/La fanciulla del West], Turandot [Turandot], Lisa [The Queen of Spades] and Yaroslavna [Prince Igor]. She collaborated with the GNO on one occasion, interpeting Eurydice in Gluck's opera Orfeo ed Eurudice during the Nazi Occupation, on 10 October 1942, at the Oden of Herodes Atticus ["Herodion"]. This particular production was staged with German and Austrian cast and crew, with the participation of the ballet of the newly founded Opera of the National (then Royal) Theater, the Symphony Orchestra of the Athens Conservatory, and the Athens Choir.
