Salvatore Catania, born in Palermo in 1921, studied mainly in Rome. In 1951 he debuted as Don Basilio in the opera Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Teatro Nuovo, Milan. He made a career by interpreting mainly starring roles in Italy’s provincial operas (Teatro Petruzzelli, Bari; Municipal Theatre of Piacenza; Teatro Verdi, Pisa, Siena), as well singing supporting roles in major operas of the Italian peninsula, including Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, Teatro San Carlo, Naples and Teatro Comunale, Florence. In 1961, Catania participated in the Festival in the Baths of Caracalla as Bonzo in Madama Butterfly and in 1965 as King of Egypt in Aida. His international career included appearances in the De Nederlandse Opera (Dutch National Opera) (1960), Théâtre de la Monnaie, Brussels (as Raymond in Lucia di Lammermour) (1961), the Cairo Opera House (1964, 1966) and the L'Opéra national du Rhin (National Rhine Opera), Strasbourg (1964). He excelled as Zacharias in the opera Nabucco. Other roles in his repertoire included: Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Ramfis (Aida), Father Guardiano (La forza del destino), Ferrando (Il trovatore), Colline (La bohème), Cesare Angelotti (Tosca), Mephistopheles (Faust), Nourabad (Les pêcheurs de perles). Catania participated in the recording of the opera Un ballo in maschera (Fabbri Records, 1969). He died on 15/6/1972. He worked with the GNO during the 1950-51 season, in the beginning of his career, interpreting the roles of Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia and Lotario in Mignon by Ambroise Thomas. // Last upate of the biography: November 2018 - The list of the productions below is continually updated.
