Soloist, Mezzo-Soprano
She was born in Cruzy (Hérault), France, on 3/6/1911. Being urged by composer Reynaldo Hahn, she studied at the Conservatory of Rouen with Henri Saint-Cricq. She continued studying at the National Conservatory of Paris with Cesbron-Viseur (1934). In 1938, she was hired as a chorister at the Grand Opera of Paris where she sang three minor roles. At the same time, she was licensed to perform in provincial lyric theaters (Marseille, Nice, etc), where, among others, she sang many mezzo-soprano leading roles of the French, German and Italian repertoire, such as: Charlotte [Werther], Margared [The King of Ys/Le roi d’Ys], Delilah [Samson and Delilah/Samson et Dalila], Orpheus [Orpheus and Eurydice/Orfeo ed Euridice], Mother [Louise], Azucena [Il trovatore], Venus [Tannhäuser] etc. She distinguished as Kundry [Parsifal], Aida [Aida], Santuzza [Cavalleria rusticana] and Carmen [Carmen]. She participated in world premieres of contemporary works by Barraud [Numance] (Paris, 1955), Stravinsky [The Rake’s Progress], Prokofiev [The Love for Three Oranges/L’ amour des trois oranges] (Monte Carlo, 1952), Françaix, [The Princess of Cleves/La princesse de Clèves] (Rouen, 1965). She sang many times also in Belgium, Algiers, Sweden, Denmark, etc. During the period 1954-72, she regularly performed at Buenos Aires as Delilah [Samson et Dalila]. She was married to critic and writer Stéphane Wolff. She retired in 1976. She passed away in Toulon, on 16/11/2005. Her discography includes complete sound recordings of Rigoletto and The Favourite [La favorite] (Vega), the opera Les Huguenots (Westminster) and sound recordings at the companies A. Ashley Disques, Pléiade, Mercury and Decca. She collaborated with the Greek National Opera once, when she interpreted Delilah in the opera Samson and Delilah [Samson et Dalila] (Odeon of Herodes Atticus, 1950/51).
