Philip Ronald Daniels
Set Designer, Costume Designer
Born in England and studied at the Old Vic Theater School in Bristol, from where he graduated in 1983. He has designed stages for many BBC productions and theaters, such as London’s West End and England’s National Theatre. He took part in the National Portrait Gallery competition and designed the curtains of the Royal Theatre at Newcastle and the Everyman Theatre at Cheltenham, built by architect Frank Matcham. Some of his designs now belong to the permanent collection of London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. Philip Roland Daniels regularly collaborates with Charles Cusick Smith. The two began separate careers as decorators but started working together in the theater in 1985. They have since designed stages and costumes for many productions -either together or separately- most of them in Great Britain. Particularly successful were their jobs for the first presentations in Europe of the Sondheim’s musicals Follies and Pacific Overtures, as well as for Hot Stuff at London’s West End, A Slice of Saturday Night (London), West Side Story and La cage aux folles (Germany) e.a. They also collaborated successfully in big productions for pop concert stage settings (group tours etc). They designed stages and costumes for theater, opera and ballet productions in theaters in central Europe, Estonia, Hong-Kong and the US. They also designed stages and costumes for the ballet production Giselle, choreographed by Mukhamedov/Petipa, at the Greek National Opera (2007/08, 2008/09).
