Leonidas DePian

Choreographer, Costume Designer
He was born in Athens in 1927. He was of Italian origin. He took up his first dance lessons at Koula Pratsika’s Scholl of Dance (1945). By Angelos Grimanis’ proposition he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Dance, London where he studied under Tamara Karsavina and Vera Volkova, graduating with honors (1947-49). He continued his studies in Paris under Serge Lifar, Olga Preobrajenska, Alexader Voliline, etc. His international career began in 1950. For 20 years he danced at and choreographed for the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas (1950-1955), the American Ballet Theatre (1955-59), Jean Babilée Ballets and the Ballets of France (1959-61). He appeared in major theaters in Europe and the United States: Royal Opera House (London), Metropolitan Opera (New York), Teatro di San Carlo (Naples), Palacio de Bellas Artes (Mexico), Teatro Colón (Buenos Aires), Berlin State Opera, Paris, etc. He danced the entire classic repertoire and works by contemporary choreographers. Worked with several leading choreographers. Serge Lifar and George Skibine choreographed works specifically for him. In 1991-96 he choreographed six ballets for GNO: Pas de quatre, Variations in white, Finale, Pas de deux, Don Quixote, Sebastian. He also designed costumes for ballets: Giselle, Le Corsaire and La Bayadère. He founded the Centre for Classical Ballet and the Athens Ballet. He invested in several children's performances. During 1994-1999, he served as artistic director of the GNO Ballet. He was a member of the Artistic Committee of the GNO, the National Theater of Northern Greece and the Municipality of Kalamata, as well as a member of the Board of the City of Athens Cultural Center and a member of the examining committee of the Varna International Ballet Competition (Bulgaria). He wrote two autobiographies: Exinda avlaies (Sixty ends of play) (publisher: Oceanida) and Emena koitane (They are looking at me) (publisher: Kastaniotis).
