Piero Francia

He was born in Genoa, Italy in 1927 and studied in Genoa and Milan. He made his debut in 1954 in the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa as Marcello in La bohème. He mainly appeared in major opera houses in Italy and elsewhere in Europe, such as the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona (1966, as Eskamillo in Carmen), the Vienna State Opera (1973, as Tonio in Pagliacci), Theatre Royal de La Monnaie in Brussels (1969, in the title role of Rigoletto), Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania, Teatro Comunale in Florence, Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Teatro Regio Torino and Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam. His repertoire included the roles of Valentin in Faust, Baron Scarpia in Tosca, Alfonso XI in The Favored (La favorita), Renato in Un ballo in maschera, Amonasro in Aida, Carlo Gérard in Andrea Chénier and High Priest of Dagon in Samson et Dalila. He also participated in recordings of Tosca (opposite Virginia Zeani and Plácido Domingo) and Un ballo in maschera. He died in Nizza Monferrato, on 14/05/1982.
