Johann Gottlieb Stephanie the Younger
Librettist
He was born on 19/02/1741 in Prussia. In 1760, during the Seven Years' War, he was captured by the Austrian Forces at the Battle of Landeshut. After nine months in captivity in the town of Villach, he joined the Imperial Army and settled in Vienna. In 1769, he translated Shakespeare's play Macbeth into German, which was successfully performed a year later. In 1778, Emperor Joseph II founded the National Singspiel (opera characterized by spoken dialogue) in Vienna, of which Gottlieb was appointed director as the father of the genre. A decisive factor in his later development was his collaboration with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, which culminated in the opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail, in which Gottlieb created variations on the libretto by Christoph Friedrich Bretzner. This opera is also one of the greatest works in the genre of the ''singspiel''. It was premiered on 16/07/1782 and received rave reviews. He died on 23/01/1800 in Vienna. The opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail was performed repeatedly at the Greek National Opera. // Last update of the biography: January 2024- The list of the productions below is complete.
