Ángeles (María de los) Gulín(Domínguez)

She was born in Ribadavia, Spain on 18/2/1939. At the age of eight she moved with her family to Montevideo, Uruguay. There, she studied voice under her father, who was music director of the city. She made her debut in 1963 as Queen of the Night (Die Zauberflöte). She continued her career appearing mainly in Spain and Italy, in roles such as Lucia (Lucia di Lammermoor), Gilda (Rigoletto) and Violetta Valéry (La traviata). In 1968, after she was awarded at the International Competition for Verdian Voices in Busseto, Italy she turned to more dramatic roles and specialized in early Verdi works, such as Oberto, conte di San Bonifacio, Nabucco, I due Foscari, Attila, Il corsaro, Stiffelio, Aroldo and Simon Boccanegra. Her repertoire also included La donna del lago, Beatrice di Tenda, Norma, Fernand Cortez by Spontini, Les Huguenots, La Gioconda, Francesca da Rimini by Zandonai, La vida breve by De Falla, Andrea Chénier and Turandot. In the GNO she interpreted the title role in Aida (Oden of Herodes Atticus, 1972) and Duchess Elena (I vespri siciliani, 1977/78). Several of her performances survive in recordings. She retired in 1987 because of health problems. She was married to baritone Antonio Blancas.
