Hans Hörner

Conductor
He was born in Munich on 30/01/1903. He studied at the Academy of Musical Art and at the University of Munich. He continued his musical studies at the University of Kiel, from which he graduated in 1930 with a thesis on the Passions of Philipp Telemann. During the period 1932-1941, he worked as a music trainer in German theaters. He began his career as orchestra director at the Altenburg State Theatre and continued with collaborations in Saarbrücken and Leipzig, where he was appointed director of the radio station in 1941. He served as conductor in the Wehrmacht. During the German occupation of Greece, he was conductor of the orchestra of the German radio station. He also conducted concerts of the ewly established Athens State Orchestra. He collaborated with the GNO on two occasions. He prepared and conducted the presentation of Fidelio starring Antonis Delendas as Florestan and Maria Callas as Leonore (Odeon of Herodes Atticus, 14/8/1944) and he conducted Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Olympia Theatre, 1944). Subsequently, as a war prisoner in Egypt, he set up an orchestra along with other captive musicians, which gave concerts, first within the camp and then throughout Cairo. During the period 1948-1955, he served as conductor of the State Opera of Ankara, where he also conducted performances featuring Turkish soprano Leyla Gencer as Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte, 1953) and as Magda (The Consul, 1954). He also conducted the city's Presidential Symphony Orchestra. In 1960, he co-edited the publication of Telemann's Lukas Passion. Finally, he was active in Tokyo as a conductor and professor of orchestra direction.
