Emil Ivanov

He was born in Rome. He studied with Asen Selimski in the Sofia National Music Academy where he first appeared in 1986 as Foresto in the opera Attila. The beginning of his international career was his success in the Belvedere song contest in Vienna. He first sang Ernani, [Ernani],Don Carlo [Don Carlo], Radames [Aida] and Cavaradossi [Tosca] in Zurich, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Essen etc. In Italy he first appeared in 1989 as Radames [Aida] at the Arena Sferisterio in Macerata. Appearances in theatres of other Italian cities followed (Florence, Rome, Bologna) as well as in Britain, Switzerland, Austria, France, Germany, Starting from 1991, when he sang the role of False Dmitriy [Boris Godunov], he was basic soloist for more than a decade at the Vienna State Opera, singing basic tenor roles. In 1992 he first appeared at the New York Metropolitan Opera as Cavaradossi [Tosca] with co-protagonist his famous compatriot soprano Ghena Dimitrova and in 1997 at La Scalla di Milano as Enzo [La Gioconda]. In 2002 he first appeared in London as Carlo [I masnadieri]. He collaborated with famous conductors such as: Abbado, Santi, Fedosejev,Kuhn, Neumann,Thielemann etc. In his vast repertoire roles in more than 45 operas are included, such as: Andrea Chenier, Cavalleria rusticana, Pagliacci, Norma, The Force of Destiny [La forza del destino], The Swallow [La Rondine], Alzira, A Masked Ball [Un ballo in maschera], Turandot, The Cloak [Il tabarro], Manon Lescaut, The Sicilian Vespers [I vespri siciliani] etc. // Last update of the biography: November 2015.
