Theodoros Karyotakis

He was born in Argos on 21/7/1903. He was cousin of the poet Kostas Karyotakis. Initially, he studied at the Athens conservatory with Filoktitis Economides and later took private lessons of harmony and composition by Dimitris Mitropoulos (1925/32) and orchestration by Marios Varvoglis (1933/36). At the same time he studied law at the University of Athens. According to Manolis Kalomiris, his works Small Symphony for string orchestra [Mikri Symphonia gia orchistra enhordon](1942) and Ballad for piano, strings and percussions [Balanda gia piano, enhorda kai krousta] (1939) stood out as some of the most important in the whole body of works of the Greek National School. He composed works of vocal music such as Song of songs [Asma asmaton], Τhe death of Hector [Ο thanatos tou Ektora] and others, cycles of songs such as Love songs [Τa erotica] with poetry by Kostas Ouranis, The cycle of Quatrains [Ο kyklos ton tetrastichon] -poetry by Kostis Palamas, Small Fires [Μikres Foties] -poetry by Stratis Mirivilis, Orion [Orion] poetry by Odysseas Elytis etc.), orchestral works (Rhapsody [Rapsodia], Epic Song [Εpiko Tragoudi], Serenade for small orchestra [Serenata gia mikri orchistra], Concert for Orchestra [Concerto gia orchistra]etc.), works for solo piano (Prelude, Choral and Canon [Preloudio,Koral kai Kanonas], Four Preludes [Τessera Preloudia], Variations to a folk song [Parallages se laiko tragoudi] etc.), works of chamber music and the fairytale-drama Flower of the Moon[Τou feggariou louloudi]. He died in Athens, on 14/6/1978. He served as secretay general of the Greek Composers Union and of the National Council of Music, member of the Board of the Greek National Opera and member of the exams committees for diplomas and certificates in a number of different conservatories. // Last update of the biography: November 2017.
