Klaus Kirchner

Soloist, Baritone
He was born in Essen on 07/11/1927. He studied in Cologne under Clemens Klettenberg and in Milan. He made his debut in 1954 at the Landestheater Detmold as Herr Ford in The Merry Wives of Windsor [Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor]. He worked at that theater until 1956 and then went on to sing at the Staatstheater Mainz (1956-59) and the Musiktheater im Revier at Gelsenkirchen (1959-63), followed by twenty years at the Baden State Theatre in Karlsruhe. He performed in most German opera houses, while beyond Germany, he was invited to sing at the Amsterdam Opera House, the Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg, the Royal Theatre in Turin, the Sao Carlos National Theater of Lisbon and the Opera Houses of Geneva and Zurich. Over the course of his carrer, he interpreted leading and supporting roles in the operas: Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro [Le nozze di Figaro], The Tales of Hoffmann [Les contes d' Hoffmann], Madama Butterfly, A Masked Ball [Un ballo in maschera], Rigoletto, The Fallen Woman [La Traviata], The Τroubadour [Il trovatore], The Barber of Seville [Il barbiere di Siviglia], Eugene Onegin, Salome, Arabella by Strauss, etc. He participated in the world premieres of the works: Ariadne [Ariane] (1961) by Bohuslav Martinu, Kaiser Jovian by Rudolf Kelterborn (1967), The Master and Margarita [Der Meister und Margarita] by Rainer Kunad (1986) and Der Dybuk by Karl Heinz Füssl (1970). Since 1973, he taught at the Karlsruhe University of Music. He died in Karlsruhe on 02/09/1990. He collaborated with the GNO on one occasion, interpreting the role of Don Alfonso [Thus Do They All/ Così fan tutte] (1982/83).
