Andreas Kouloumbis
Soloist, Baritone
Born in Athens in 1936, he studied monody at the National Conservatory. After completing his studies, he was immediately engaged by the Greek National Opera, with which he collaborated for forty-five years, from the early 1960s until 2005.A multitalented singer, with an outstanding baritone voice, he made his debut in 1962 as Masetto (Don Giovanni) and Tonio (Pagliacci). With the support of Kostis Bastias, he initially became a member of the Greek National Opera Chorus and in 1967, at the suggestion of Antiochos Evangelatos, he became a solois. Since then he had sung almost all the major roles in his repertoire such as Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Count Monterone (Rigoletto), Giorgio Germont (La traviata), Macbeth, Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), Scarpia (Tosca), Paolo Albiani (Simon Boccanegra), Rodrigo (Don Carlo), Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Schicchi (Gianni Schicchi), Lescaut (Manon Lescaut), Aeneas (Dido and Aeneas), and Count di Luna (Il trovatore). He was an important figure in Greek opera and was loved by Greek audiences. He, also performed internationally (Italy, Germany, USA, Yugoslavia, Belgium, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Poland) in operas and recitals. As a soloist, he had worked with the Athens State Orchestra, Thessaloniki State Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT). He also collaborated with Mikis Theodorakis in Axion Esti (1977-2009) and with Manos Hadjidakis in recitals at the Athens Concert Hall. In the mid-1990s (1995-1996, 1996-1997), he served as Deputy Artistic Director of the Greek National Opera and together with his wife, Carmen Rouggeri contributed to the creation of Opera for children. He was a founding member of the Athens Chamber Opera and had a great passion for the theatre. He wrote lyrics for operas, plays and children’s productions performed by the Greek National Opera.
