Giorgio Lamperti

He was born in Andria, in Southern Italy on 09/07/1938. He first studied the violin and singing at the “Claudio Monteverdi” Conservatory in Bolzano. After 1959 he continued his studies at the Pietro a Majella Conservatory in Naples and under Ettore Campogalliani in Mantova. His first appearance which was under the pseudonym Giorgio Casellato-Lamberti took place at the Rome Opera in 1964 where he sang the role of Arrigo [The Sicilian vespers/ I vespri siciliani]. There followed appearances in the operas of important Italian cities: Bologna, Florence, Venice, Turin, Naples, Palermo, Parma, Genova, Trieste. In 1965 he sang at the first worldwide presentation of the opera Wallenstein by Mario Zanfred. He participated in the Arena di Verona Opera Festival (1970/71, 1976/77, 1980), the Florence Musical May and the Terme di Caracalla summer Music Festival (Rome, 1989). He was invited to sing leading tenor roles at the operas of Vienna, Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne, Paris, Brussels ( Royal Monnaie Theater), Budapest, Bucharest, Sofia, Zagreb, Amsterdam, Helsinki, Basel, London (Royal Opera of Covent Garden), Philadelphia and Baltimore. His first appearance in the U.S.A was at the Opera of Chicago and in the role of Radames [Aida] (1965). In 1974 he sang at the Metropolitan Opera of New York the roles of Cavaradossi [Tosca], Turiddu [The Rustic chivalry/ Cavalleria rusticana], Enzo [La Gioconda] and Radames [Aida]. His repertory also includes the roles of Manrico [The Trobadour/Il Trovatore], Ricardo [Un ballo in maschera], Edgardo di Ravenswood [Lucia di Lammermoor], Don Jose [Carmen], Hermann [The Queen of Spades/ Dama Pica] as well as roles from operas by Gluck, d’Albert, Berlioz, Wagner, Glinka, Stravinsky, Respighi, Petrassi etc. He retired in 1966 having sang as a last role the leading part from the opera Samson et Dalida at the Zurich State Opera. At the GNO he sang the role of Renato Des Grieux [Manon Lescaut] (1984/85).
