He was born in Italy. He studied voice under baritone Paolo Silveri. During the 1987/8 season he excelled in the international competitions Mattia Battistini, Vincenzo Bellini, Laura Volpi and Verdian Voices. He debuted in 1987 at the Teatro Eliseo of Rome as Amonasro (Aida), and has ever since stood out for his performances in operas by Verdi. He appeared worldwide, in major festivals and opera houses, such as: La Scala Milan, Teatro dell’ Opera in Rome, Florence Maggio Musicale, Arena di Verona, Teatro Regio di Torino, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Teatro Massimo of Palermo, Massimo Bellini Theater of Catania, Metropolitan Opera of New York, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Vienna State Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Teatro Colón Buenos Aires, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, Palm Beach Opera, Opera of Israel, National Center for the Performing Arts Beijing, etc. He performed the role of Amonasro in a presentation of the opera Aida at the pyramids of Egypt in 1998.
