Gert Meditz
Conductor
He was born in 1943. He studied violin and orchestra direction at Musikhochschule Graz. Then he toook refinement courses by Hans Swarowsky and Kurt Wöss. He was awarded at the conducting competitions "Herbert von Karajan" (Berlin, 1978) and "Karl Böhm" (Salzburg, 1977). He worked as a conductor for the Filarmonica Marchigiana (Ancona), the Theater of Sao Carlos (Lisbon), the Theater "Verdi" (Trieste), the Chamber Opera of Vienna, the Youth Orchestra of Austria, etc. He appeared in Germany, USA, Canada, Poland, South Africa, Iceland, Finland and South Korea. He conducted more than 40 operas of the German and Italian repertoire, including: Fidelio, Wozzek, Salome, Elektra, The Knight of the Rose [Der Rosenkavalier], Lohengrin, The Flying Dutchman [Der fliegende Holländer], Parsifal, Tristan und Isolde, Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro [Le nozze di Figaro], Thus do they all [Così fan tutte], The Barber of Seville [Il barbiere di Siviglia], The Turk in Italy [Il turco in Italia], La bohème, Aida, Rigoletto, The Troubadour [Il trovatore] and Nabucco. He also conducted certain seldomly presented works, such as: The Dead City [Die tote Stadt] by Korngold, Trouble in Tahiti by Bernstein and Goyescas by Granados. He also conducted numerous operettas as well as standard symphonic repertoire in concert, including symphoniew by Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Schumann, Schubert, etc. He made recordings. He taught at the Musikhochschule Graz. At the GNO, he conducted The Elixir of Love [L' elisir d'amore] (1995/96).
