English director, she is established as one of the leading names in contemporary performance. Her theatre, film / television and opera productions often combine extreme naturalism, experimental and sometimes controversial techniques with the creative use of multimedia. She began her theatre career at the King’s Head Theatre as a production assistant. Later she became an assistant director at Paines Plough and at the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1990, she founded her own company, where she directed a number of pioneering and highly acclaimed productions. She has also worked as an associate director with Royal Court Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre (London). Her recent opera credits include Purcell’s Miranda (Opéra Comique, Paris), Pelléas et Mélisande, Alcina, J. S. Bach’s Trauernacht and Vasco Mendonça’s The House Taken Over (Aix-en-Provence Festival), Lucia di Lammermoor (Royal Opera House), Joanna Lee’s The Way Back Home (ENO / Young Vic) and Frank Martin’s Le Vin herbé (Berlin State Opera). // Last update: February 2019
