Antonius Nicolescu

Born in Bucharest, Romania, on 17.08.1946. He studied at the Conservatory of Bucharest under Mihail Stirbei . In 1971 he made his debut at the Romania National Opera in Bucharest as Vladimir Igorevich in Prince Igor while, during the same period, he appeared in the Berlin State Opera and the National Theatre Darmstadt. In 1973 he won second prize in the international song competition at `s-Hertogenbosch Netherlands. In 1984 he joined the Aalto-Musiktheater Essen. In 1992 he appeared as Hoffmann [The Tales of Hoffmann / Les contes d'Hoffmann] in the Bastille Opera. Important roles of his career include Il Duca di Mantova [ Rigoletto], Alfredo [The Fallen Woman/ La Traviata] (1994, Essen), Nadir [Pearl Fishers / Les pêcheurs de perles], Gerald [ Lakmé], Faust [Faust], Ernesto [ Don Pasquale]), Conte d’ Almaviva [the Barber of Seville / Il barbiere di Siviglia], Rodolfo [ La Bohème] and Narraboth [Salome]. He sang roles from the Mozart repertoire, such as Don Ottavio [Don Giovanni / Don Giovanni] and Tamino [The Magic Flute / Die Zauberflöte], and also of the Russian repertoire, such as Lenski [Eugene Onegin]. He appeared at the State Theatre of Bern in The Knights of Ekebu [I Cavalieri di Ekebù] by Zandonai and Madama Batterfly [Madama Butterfly], as well as at the State Theatre in Hanover in Martha [Martha] (1995) and the State Opera House Hamburg in Carmen (1996) and Adriana Lecouvreur (1998). His interpretations were recorded on the Romanian label Electrecord. He worked once with the Greek National Opera interpretating the role of Nadir in the Pearl Fishers Opera (1972-73).
