Ernesto Palacio

He was born in Lima, Peru on 19/10/1946. Initially a diplomat, he studied voice in his home country. In 1968 he was appointed Vice Consul of Peru in Milan, and continued his studies there under Vladimiro Badiali and Renato Pastorino. He was awarded in the singing contests Achille Peri in Reggio Emilia (1971) and the New Rossinian Voices of the Italian Radio and Television (1972). He debuted as Lindoro in Rossini's opera The Italian Girl in Algiers [L 'Italiana in Algeri], broadcast by the Italian Broadcasting Service (RAI, 1972). He subsequently pursued a significant career in major theaters around the world: La Scala Milan, Rome Opera, Teatro Massimo Palermo, Teatro di San Carlo Naples, Royal Opera House London, Opéra de Marseille, Aix-en-Provence International Opera Festival, Spoleto Festival, Houston Grand Opera, Teatro Colón Buenos Aires, as well as in Bilbao, Dallas and Caracas, Venezuela. He made his Metropolitan Opera New York debut as Lindoro, opposite Marilyn Horne (1985). He participated in the modern revival of Rossini's opera Cyrus in Babylon [Ciro in Babilonia] (1988). He excelled as a singer of roles in operas by Rossini [The Thieving Magpie/La Gazza ladra; Cinderella/La cenerentola; The Silken Ladder/La scala di seta; The Turk in Italy/Il Turco in Italia] and Mozart [Thus do they all/Così fan tutte; The marriage of Figaro/Le nozze di Figaro]. He also sang works by Bellini [The Sleepwalker/La Sonnambula], Donizetti [The Elixir of Love/L 'elisir d'amore; Don Pasquale], as well as the operas Spanish time [L' heure espagnole], Falstaff, etc. He can be heard in a number of recordings (Philips, CBS, Joker, Voce, RCA-Erato, Arkadia). He worked with the GNO in the production of The Barber of Seville/Il barbiere di Siviglia, singing the role of Count Almaviva (1995/96).
