Althea-Maria Papoulia
Soloist, Soprano
She was born in Montreal and raised in Boston. She studied at the McGill University School of Music Montreal, graduating in 1989. She carried on with her studies in London under Vera Rózsa and Paul Hamburger, as a fellow of the Association “Maria Callas Scholarships” (1988). She was also trained in Vienna under Jeannette Pilou and Hilde Zadek. In 1991, she made her debut at the Cologne Opera, with which she subsequently entered regular cooperation. In 1993 she was awarded first prize in the (International Hans Gabor) Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna. Since 1994, she has worked regularly with the Staatstheater Saarbrücken, where she appeared, among others, as Adina [The Elixir of Love/L 'elisir d'amore], Marguerite [Faust], Donna Anna [Don Giovanni], Violetta Valéry [The Fallen Woman/La traviata], Micaëla [Carmen], Musetta [La bohème], Liu [Turandot], Pamina [The magic Flute/Die Zauberflöte]. She has appeared in operas, recitals and concerts in the USA and Europe, such as Germany, Austria, England and Bulgaria. At the Glyndebourne Festival, she starred as Fiordiligi in Thus Do They All [Così fan tutte] (1998). She taught classical singing in the (American) Webster University Vienna and delivers seminars for singers in European cities. Her performance as Micaëla in Carmen was recorded on DVD (2003). In Athens, she made her debut in 1995 at the Athens Concert Hall, as Micaëla in Carmen. In 1996, she appeared as Liu opposite tenor Nicola Martinucci as Calàf [Turandot]. Her collaboration with the GNO includes the roles of Liu [Turandot] (Herodeion, 1995/96), Pamina [The Magic Flute] (1996/97), and Ellen [Peter Grimes] (2004/05).
