He was born in Copenhagen on 16/07/1928. First he trained as a bass-baritone. He studied in Denmark, France, Italy and Switzerland, at the University of Indiana (U.S.A.) and, then, in New Orleans. During the years 1957-1960, he was taught voice by Charles Paddock, who retrained him as a tenor. In 1958, he made his professional debut at the Opera of New Orleans as Pong (Turandot) to then appear in Aachen (Germany) as Radamès (Aida). Over the following years, he grew into a world renowned "heroic" tenor. He appeared as Hoffmann (Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Brussels, 1961), as Peter Grimes (Wuppertal, 1962), as Emperor (Die Frau ohne Schatten) and as Herod (Salome, Lisbon, 1975), as Siegfried (Siegfried) and as Tannhäuser (Tannhäuser, Kassel, 1964), as Faust (Doktor Faust by Busoni) and as Prince Shuysky (Boris Godunov, Amsterdam, 1989), as Herod and as Drum Major (Wozzeck, La Scala of Milan, 1967, 1971). He also appeared repeatedly at the Bayreuth Festival: as Kunz Vogelgesang (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) (1963), as Siegmund (Die Walküre, 1966) and as Siegfried (1968). He interpreted that latter role for the first time at the 1968 Salzburg Festival, under baton of Karajan. His first appearance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York was in 1966, as Tristan (Tristan und Isolde), alongside Birgit Nilsson. He also appeared in Buenos Aires, Paris and Mexico City. He worked with leading soloists, conductors and directors of the 1960s through the 1990s. He made recordings. He taught voice in Seattle (USA). He died in the United States on 21/06/1993.
