Dimitrios Rodiris

Director
He was born in Piraeus in 1899. He began his studies at the Military Academy, dropping out after two years to study law at the University of Athens. He studied at the Drama School of the Hellenic Theater Association and then joined the Conservatory Theater, where he studied under Oikonomou and Kalogerikos. He began his theatrical career in 1919 as an actor at the Marika Kotopouli theater company, where he played mostly classical repertory roles. In the period 1930/33, on a scholarship by the Academy of Athens, he studied direction in Austria and Germany under renowned director Max Reinhardt. In the 1920’s he translated literary and theatrical work and wrote essays. He taught in the Marika Kotopouli, National Theater and National Conservatory drama schools. In 1933, he was appointed director with the then Royal Theater and the Odeon Theater (Theatro Odeiou), where he first appeared as director of Kalomiris’ musical drama The mother’s ring [Το dakhtylidi tis manas]. He then he served as General Manager of the Greek National Theater (1946/50 – 1953/55). He founded the Greek Theatre (Elliniki Skini) (1950/52) and the Piraeus Theater (Peiraiko Theatro) (1957), as the head of which he went on a number of tours in many European, North and South American and Asian countries, presenting ancient tragedy performances. He directed many works of classical and modern world repertory, including 11 works by Shakespeare and numerous ancient tragedies. His direction style of Electra and Hamlet, staged by the Royal Theater in England and Germany in 1939, were praised by international theater critics (1939). In particular, the performance of Aeschylus’ trilogy Oresteia at the Herodeion, Athens in 1949 was considered as a major artistic achievement. He died in Athens on 20/12/1981. At the GNO he directed the performance The mother’s ring [Το dakhtylidi tis manas] (1957/58) and served as GNO board member in the period 1953/56.
