Christos Sarfatis

He began studying voice at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki in 1939 under Italian teacher Kafasso Carolina. After the war, in 1944, he moved to Athens and continued his studies at the Athens Conservatoire under Kimon Triantafyllou. He completed his studies at Manolis Kalomiri’s National Conservatoire under Miltiades Vythinos, graduating with Honors and First Prize. He joined the GNO in 1954. During the thirty-year period from 1958 to 1988, he sang secondary and supporting roles in 21 operas and one operetta in 77 productions and/or revivals. The roles he sang include: Don Basilio [The barber of Seville/Il barbiere di Siviglia], Sparafucile [Rigoletto], Bonzo [Madama Butterfly], Ferrand [The troubadour/Il trovatore], Filiberto [Il signor Bruschino], Alvise Badoero [La Gioconda], Altar boy [Tosca], Grand Duke Notaras [Constantine Palaiologos], Prison guard [The power of fate/La forza del destino], Guardian of the temple [Hero and Leander], Cook [Lily on seashore/To krino sto akroyiali], Sergeant [Manon Lescaut], Benoît [La bohème], Judge [A masked ball/Un ballo in maschera]. He participated in the GNO premieres of The Khovansky Affair [Khovanshchina] (1960/61), Eugene Onegin (1965/66), Georgios Sklavos’ Lily on seashore [To krino sto akroyiali] (1965/66), Il signor Bruschino (1969/70), La belle Hélène (1960/61).
