Bruno Sebastian

He was born in 1935 in Povolleto, Italy. He trained with Marcello and Mario del Monaco. He made his professional debut Donizetti’s opera Belisario (Teatro La Fenice, Venice, 1969). In 1970 he rocketed to fame by substituting Nicolai Gedda as Arnoldo [Guglielmo Tell] at the Musical May Festival in Florence. From 1970 he initially appeared on Italian stages (Rome) and festivals (Caracalla Baths). There followed international engagements: Dubrovnik Festival (1972), Brussels and Dijon Opera (1976), Caracas Opera (1981), Cape Town Opera (1981-83) etc. In 1986-87 he appeared at the Metropolitan Opera of New York as Manrico [TheTrobadour/ Il Trovatore] as well as in operas of various north American cities (Boston, Seattle, Chicago, Newark) and South America (Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires). The following years he appeared at the Grand Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and sang the roles of: Othello [Othello] at the National Theater of Prague, in Cologne and Basel, the role of Manrico in Adelaide, Bratislava and the Berlin State Opera, Andrea Chenier [Andrea Chenier] at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Turiddu [The Rustic Chivalry/ Cavalleria Rusticana] at the Vienna State Opera, Samson [Samson and Dalida] at Zagreb, Radames [Aida] at the Arena Opera Festival in Verona and the Caracalla Batths. His repertory also includes the roles of Don Carlos [Don Carlos], Macduff [Macbeth], Ricardo [A masked ball/ Un ballo in maschera], Canio [Pagliacci], Naraboth [Salome] and Calaf [Turandot]. He recorded the operas Jone by Petrella (Bongiovanni) and Belisarius (Melodrama). He died on 24/09/2009 at Udine, Italy. At the Greek National Opera (GNO) he sang the roles of the Duke of Mantova [Rigoletto] (1948/85) and Canio [Pagliacci] 1984/85).
