Adrian Thompson
Soloist, Tenor
He was born in 1955. He studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he currently teaches voice. Artistically active in many ways, he participates in opera performances and symphony concerts, and gives singing recitals. His very extensive repertoire ranges from the Renaissance to the modern vocal music of the 20th and 21st century, including operas by Janáček, Busoni, Nielsen, Richard Strauss, John Adams, Britten, Shostakovich, etc. He has appeared in major European opera houses and festivals, such as the Welsh National Opera, the English National Opera, the Scottish Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées (Paris), the Glyndebourne Festival, as well as in Geneva, Stuttgart, Darmstadt, the Bregenz Festival, the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Amsterdam and Cologne. He has participated in concerts in Australia, North America, Japan, Scandinavia and the Baltic countries. He has recorded vocal music for major labels (Hyperion, Virgin Classics, Deutsche Grammophon, Chandos, NAXOS). His repertoire also includes leading tenor roles, such as: Canio [Pagliacci], Peter Grimes [Peter Grimes], Florestan [Fidelio], Albert Gregor [The Makropulos Affair/Věc Makropulos], Midas [The Love of Danae/Die Liebe der Danae], Grigoriy [Boris Godunov], Bacchus [Ariadne on Naxos/Ariadne auf Naxos], Živný [Destiny/Osud by Janáček]. He collaborated with the GNO once, interpreting the role of Mao Tse-tung in John Adams's opera Nixon in China (Athens Concert Hall, 2006-07).
