Sergios Vafeiadis

Director
He was born in Constantinople in 1926. At a young age he moved with his family to Paris. He studied at the Paris Institute of Political Science [École Sciences Politiques] and the Cours Simon Drama School [Cours d'art dramatique René-Simon] in Paris. In 1957 he moved with his family to Greece and in 1958 began his collaboration with the Greek National Opera as supervisor of the ballet. In 1961 he became assistant director and in 1962 was promoted to director and undertook production of the opera Nabucco at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. He worked with the Greek National Opera from 1957-1996 collaborating on more than 150 productions/ revivals in 43 works (operas, operettas, musicals). Revivals of his work can be found until 2001. He directed many premier revivals at the Greek National Opera: Manon Lescaut, Il signor Bruschino, Suzanna’s Secret [Il segreto di Susanna], Hero and Leander (Andreas Nezeritis) , Suor Angelica, The Cloak [Il tabarro], The Wise (Girl)[Die Kluge],L’ heure espagnole], Show Boat. He directed many productions of the basic repertoire: Aida , The Godson ,[O’Vaftistikos] Rustic Chivalry [ Cavalleria rusticana], Carmen, Madame Butterfly [Madama Butterfly], La bohème, Nabucco, Pagliacci, Rigoletto , Gianni Schicchi, The Fallen Woman [ La traviata], The Troubadour [Il trovatore] etc. He was a member of the Artistic Committee of the Greek National Opera (1974-1980). He worked for many years on opera productions in Yugoslavia (Belgrade, Novi Sad, Ljubljana) and directed two musical films for Yugoslavian television. For his 20 year artistic contribution to the theater of Yugoslavia and his contribution to Greek-Yugoslav friendship he was awarded the badge of the "Order of the Yugoslav Flag with Silver Star.”
