Elsa Vergi

Elsa Vergi was born in Athens on 23/05/1921. She studied theater at the National Theater Drama School, as well as piano and dance at the School of Dance and Gymnastics of Koula Pratsika (now State School of Dance). She debuted in Spyros Melas’ Papaflessas at the National Theatre of Greece in 1940. In 1947, she was sent to the USA to study contemporary American theater. In 1953, she gave a recital of ancient drama in London, Brussels and The Hague. She established her own troupe (1959) and playhouse (Vergi Theater, 1970), while she carried on with her international appearances in Egypt, Cyprus and Europe. She took part in the Edinburgh Festival, worked as a lead actress with Dimitris Rontiris’ Piraeus Theatre (in Sophocles’ Electra and Euripides' Medea, 1966), and after 1980, she often participated with her group in the Athens Festival. She worked opposite renowned actors of the dramatic repertory (Dimitris Horn, Lukia Kallergi, Vaso Manolidou, Antigoni Valakou, Mary Aroni). Vergi was singled out for her performance in ancient tragedy works, as well as in works of Greek and international repertory (Faust, New Life, Dawn, Midsummer Night's Dream, Empress Theophano). She worked with the Greek Radio Corporation (EIR) in radio transfers of plays and as a narrator in Sound and Light (Ichos kai Fos), of the City of Rhodes. She died on 25/6/1989. She participated in the GNO productions of Petros Petridis’ ballet O pramateftis [The Pedlar] (1943/44, 1957/58).
