He was born in Prince Albert (Canada) on 29/10/1926. He studied voice under George Lambert and Hermann Geiger-Torel at the Toronto Royal Conservatory. He had a “heroic” tenor’s voice. He debuted in 1954 with the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto as Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto), and continued to sing in Toronto and Ontario. His international career began with his appearance at the London Royal Opera, in 1956, where he continued to appear up until 1985, playing leading roles, such as: Aeneas (Les Troyens), Radames (Aida), Don Carlo (Don Carlo), Florestan (Fidelio), Tristan (Tristan und Isolde), Canio (Pagliacci), Peter Grimes (Peter Grimes). He was an excellent performer of Wagnerian characters, while he also excelled in performing roles of the French and Italian repertory. In 1960 he appeared at the Metropolitan Opera of New York as Canio (Pagliacci) and then went on to sing in 277 productions there of 17 operas, including: Carmen, Queen of Spades, Samson et Dalila, Otello, Parsifal, Les Troyens, Fidelio, etc. His interpretation of Otello was exemplary. He appeared at the Bayreuth Festival in the role of Siegmund (Die Walküre, 1958) and Parsifal (Parsifal, 1964). He also appeared at the Festival of Salzburg, at La Scala of Milan, in Paris, San Francisco, Dallas and Boston. He retired in 1988. In 1968 he was made a Companion of the Order of Canada and, in 1998, he received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement. His interpretations are widely available in discography (Philips, EMI, RCA, Walhall, Sony, DG, DECCA).He died on July 7th, 2015.
