He was born in Hamburg. He studied voice training under Naan Pöld at the Hamburg Music Academy and furthered his studies with Ugo Ugaro Garbaccio in Paris. He made his debut while still a student, as Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro, Pforzheim, Germany). Initially he was a member of the Bielefeld Opera Company (1986-94). In 1991 he sang at the grand opening of rebuilt Frankfurt Opera . Subsequently, he was recruited from the Cologne Opera (1995-2001).
