Carlos Almaguer

He was born in Mexico. From a young age, he learned how to play various musical instruments and started taking singing lessons (Francisco Amador). At the age of eighteen, he came in third at the singing contest for young opera singers “Carlo Morelli” in Mexico and the following year (1994) he won the competition. After winning a scholarship, he continued his studies with Carlo Bergonzi at the Sienna Academy and with Vicente Sardinero in Madrid (1996-2003) and won numerous prizes in international competitions, such as the first prize at the Verviers International Singing Competition (Belgium, 1997). In 1999, he made his first appearance at the Frankfurt Opera as Alfio in Cavalleria rusticana. He has performed at leading opera houses and international festivals in Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy, England, France, China, USA, Israel, Australia, etc. He has interpreted all major baritone roles of Verdi’s operas, including Rigoletto, Don Carlo (La forza del destino), Amonasro (Aida), Renato (Un ballo in maschera), Il conte di Luna (Il trovatore), Ezio (Attila), Simon Boccanegra, Macbeth, Jago (Ernani), as well as in other Italian operas, including: Andrea Chénier, Tosca, Pagliacci, Luisa Miller, La fanciulla del West. For the GNO he has interpreted the title role in Rigoletto, the role of Alfio in Cavalleria rusticana and Tonio in Pagliacci (both staged at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in 2011, in the context of the Athens Epidaurus Festival) and the role of Guido di Montforte in I vespri siciliani (2012/13, Athens Concert Hall). // Last update of the biography: November 2018 - The list of the productions below is complete.
