She was born in El Paso (Texas) on 9/11/1927. She began her musical studies in Mexico and continued them in Milan with the soprano Adelaide Saraceni. In her early years she preferred to sing tango, but after the persuasion of her mother she studied opera with great success. In 1952 she made her debut at the Teatro Nuovo in Milan, and on 29/11/1956 she sang Juliet in the opera Les contes d'Hoffmann by Jacques Offenbach at the Metropolitan Opera in New York (then based on Broadway), where she remained until 1968, giving nearly 150 performances. Her repertoire included a wide range of roles such as Madelon (Andrea Chénier), First Norn (Götterdämmerung), La Cieca (La Gioconda), Carmen (Carmen), Preziosilla (La forza del destino), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Suzuki (Madama Butterfly), Annina (Der Rosenkavalier) and Mary (Der fliegende Holländer). An important moment in her career was her appearance as Iras in Samuel Barber's Antony and Cleopatra, which was performed on 16/9/1966 on the occasion of the dedication of the Metropolitan Opera of New York's new building in Lincoln Square. She also performed at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, as well as in Naples, Parma, Bordeaux and Wiesbaden. At the Greek National Opera, she performed once singing the role of Carmen in the opera of the same name by Georges Bizet (1962).
