
Agnes Baltsa
Soloist, Mezzo-soprano
An internationally acclaimed Greek mezzo-soprano, she was born on the island Lefkas and started taking piano lessons at the age of seven. She studied singing in Athens and Munich (Maria Callas scholarship) and made her debut as Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro) in Frankfurt (1968). She has appeared at the most famous theatres worldwide, including the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Vienna State Opera, MET, Bavarian State Opera (Munich), La Scala (Milan), Royal Opera House (Covent Garden, London), Opéra national de Paris, as well as repeatedly at the Salzburg Festival, in collaboration with leading conductors and directors. Ηer long-standing collaboration with maestro Herbert von Karajan has been of great importance for her artistic career. Her wide-ranging repertory includes, among others, operas by Mozart, Rossini, Bellini, Verdi, Strauss and Wagner. From 1970 to 1990 she was the most popular Carmen. She has recorded extensively and has been honored with numerous distinctions.
