Domenico Balzani

He was born in Alghero (Sassari), in Sardinia. He studied economics at the University of Sassari and then vocals at the Conservatories of Verona and Rovigo, from where he graduated with distinctions. He perfected his techique with Angelo Capobianco. He started his professional vareer in 1999. He won the opera singing contests of Basiola (Cremina), Tagliavini (Deutschlandsberg, Austria), Placido Domingo Operalia (Hamburg) and Rosetum (Milan). He has sung under important conductors, such as Yuri Ahronovich, Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, Michel Plasson, Maurizio Areba, and he has worked with directors such as Franco Zeffirelli, Hugo de Ana, Christopher Loy, Mario Martone, Giuseppe Patroni Griffi, Luca Ronconi, etc. He has performed in major opera houses, such as, among others: Deutsches Opera in Berlin, Oper Frankfurt, Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Teatro Verdi in Cagliari, Teatro Regio in Turin, Teatro Verdi in Trieste, National Opera of Istambul, National Opera of Lima, Israeli National Opera, Tokyo New National Theater, Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, National Opera of Toronto and Teatro dell'Opera in Rome, as well as at the festivals Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Florence) and Terme di Caracalla (Rome). He has an increasing discography (DECCA, Bongiovanni, Warner, etc.). His repertoire includes roles in Italian bel canto operas (Verdi, Rossini, Donizetti), as well as in operas by Cilea, Puccini, Salieri, Mozart, Giordano, Leoncavallo, Gounod, Bizet and Ravel. In 1996-97, he performed in Athens, as Figaro in The Barber of Seville [Il barbiere di Siviglia], for the GNO.
