Paolo Barbacini

Soloist, Tenor
He was born in Reggio Emilia, Italy, on 20/11/1946. He studied vocals and violin in his hometown, from where he graduated with a diploma. In 1973, he debuted at the Teatro Nuovo in Milan, interpreting the eponymous leading role in Massenet's opera Werther. The following years, he pursued a succesful career as a tenor in operas by Mozart and Rossini. He appeared at Italian opera houses, on tours, at European theaters and at the Festivals of Aix-en-Provence, Edinbourgh and Martina Franca. He sang, among others, in Rome and Turin in the role of Alfredo [La traviata], at the Paris Grand Opera House in the role of Fenton [Falstaff], at the Royal Opera of Wallonia (Liège) in the role of Conte Almaviva [The Barber of Seville/Il barbiere di Siviglia] (1983), at La Scala, Milan, in the world premiere of Manzoni's opera Doctor Faustus, at the State Opera of Vienna in the role of Don Basilio [The Marriage of Figaro/Le nozze di Figaro] (1993), at the Terme di Caracala and Macerata Festivals in the role of Pong [Turandot], and at Teatro Carlo Felice, Genoa, in the roles of the four demonic characters in the opera The Tales of Hoffman [Les contes d'Hoffmann]). He participated in recordings of the works Falstaff, Don Chisciotte (by Paisiello), and La pietra del Paragone (Nuova Era Records), La Gazzetta (Bongiovanni Records), Il Turco in Italia and Il barbiere dy Siviglia (Fonit Cetra Records), etc. He collaborated with the GNO on one occasion, interpreting Elvino in Bellini's opera La sonnambula, in 1977-78.
