Pierre Barrat

He was born in France in 1931. In 1968, he founded the Angers Musical Theater (Théâtre musicale d'Angers) and focused on modern lyrical repertoire. Subsequently, he directed for the Atelier Lyrique du Rhin in Colmar (France). In 1972, he was hired by the Opera National du Rhin in Strasbourg (France). He also worked from 1969 to 1976 for the Théâtre Musical au festival d'Avignon, after an invitation by Jean Vilar. There, he directed musical plays by Kurt Weill, Benjamin Britten, Claude Prey, Hans Werner Henze, Georges Aperghis, Maurice Ohana, François-Bernard Mâche, Ivo Malec and György Ligeti. After 1990, he worked again with the Atelier du Rhin, where he appeared both as an actor and as a director. As a theater actor, he has participated in productions of plays by Colette Audry, Diego Fabri, Molière, Jean Giraudoux, Antoine Vitez and Schiller (1957-2011). He has directed plays by Hugo, Sophocles, Ionesco, Max Frisch, Shakespeare, Molière, Brecht, Laclos, Chartreux, Claudel, etc. For the GNO, he directed the first ever Greek staging of Prokofiev's opera Betrothal in a Monastery, during the seasons 1978-79 and 1979-80.
