He was born in Bitonto, Italy on 17/2/1888. He began his musical training and learned to play the violin from an early age. Having won a scholarship for the Conservatory S. Pietro a Maiella of Naples, he continued his violin studies while he further studied the organ, the piano and orchestral conducting. He made his professional debut at the theatre San Carlo in Naples conducting Verdi’s Aida (1908). During the years 1911-1914 he became director of the Compagnia Italiana dell’Opera Comica Caramba-Scognamiglio, while he also conducted Franz Lehar’s operettas. His reputation in Italy and abroad gradually grew. In 1918, upon an invitation of Enrico Caruso, he took part in a tour in the U.S.A. On 5/4/1921 he conducted with great success, the opera Manon Lescaut of Puccini, in the presence of the author, at the Teatro Costanzi di Roma. In the same theatre followed the successful productions of the works: Falstaff, Madame Butterfly [Madama Butterfly], Carmen, Der Rosenkavalier. Later, he successfully continued his career in South America. In Colon Theatre in Buenos Aires, he conducted among other works, in a first presentation, the modern operas: Dolores (Tomas Breton), Die Dorfschule (Felix Weingartner), Romeo and Juliet [Giulietta e Romeo] by Ricardo Zandonai, Fior di Neve (Constantino Gaito). He also conducted in the Massimo Theatre of Rio de Janeiro. During 1926-1935 he worked with the Metropolitan Opera in New York where he conducted 487 performances. Later he moved to Rome where he conducted for many years at the Opera Theatre working with distinguished opera singers. He died at Spoleto on 8/2/1964. During the 1950-51 season, he was invited to conduct with the GNO the performances of the works Cavalleria rusticana, Madame Butterfly [Madama Butterfly] and La bohème.
