Kalina Bogoeva

Dancer, Choreographer
She was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. She was a pupil of Bulgarian ballet pedagogist Lili Beron. She debuted in 1954. She studied at the National Ballet School in Sofia and at the Classical Ballet Academy in Moscow. She continued her studies at the Moscow State Academy of Choreography with the internationally acclaimed teacher Elizaveta Pavlovna Gerdt. In 1985, she graduated from the Higher Theater Institute in Moscow, with degrees in ballet and production. At the same time, she was attending courses on ballet pedagogy with Jemchudjina and on dance criticism-journalism with Eliach. Since 1958, she had been the leading dancer at the State Opera and Ballet Theater in Sofia, a position that she held until 1988. She appeared in many European and American countries. She has staged works by Minkus, Rossini, Respigi, and she has danced in works by Bach, Debussy, etc. Fot the GNO, she choreographed the ballets Don Quixote (1981-82) and Giselle (Act II: 1981; full ballet: 1982, 1983, 1986). She is considered an authority in ballet pedagogy. From 1974 to 1983, she was teacher and artistic director at the State School of Choreography in Sofia. In 1992, in collabortation with the Opera and the Municipality of Varna, she founded the Varna International Dance Academy, and today she is the director of its pedagogy department. In 1993, she introduced the class of ballet pedagogy in the curriculum of the Pancho Vladigerov National Music Academy (Sofia). From 1994 to 1998, she was artistic director of the Arabesque dance company. She is president of the Kalina Bogoeva Foundation. She has written books on dance (1985, 2009). She has been awarded important distinctions in Bulgary for her contribution in ballet pedagogy (2006, 2011).
