Demetrios Hamoudopoulos
Musicologist, Ethnomusicologist, Music Critic
He was born in Istanbul in 1904 and died in Athens in 1992. He was the son of Dimitris Chamoudopoulos, legal advisor to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople during Ioakim III’s term in office. He was a cousin and godson of composer Manolis Kalomiris, with whom he shared intellectual and ideological views. He concluded his high school at Istanbul’s Greek-French Lyceum, obtaining a diploma in French (1921) and graduating from the Greek department of the Lyceum (1922). In 1922-1924 he studied law at the Vienna University while also studying music. He continued his law and music studies in Paris. He was a member of the Hellenic Conservatory Symphony Orchestra under Dimitri Mitropoulos (1925), as well as a member with the Concert Association Orchestra (1926) and the Athens Conservatory Symphony Orchestra (1927). He studied violin at the Greek National Conservatory, under Freiderikos Voloninis and obtained a diploma in 1927. In 1928 he graduated from the Athens Law School and in 1930 he was appointed an attorney with the Bank of Greece. In the period 1935-1967 he was a music critic with the newspapers Proia (1935-1944) and Eleftheria (1945-1967). In addition, he wrote reviews, articles and studies on intellectual and artistic topics, published in newspapers and foreign language journals. He was also a professor at the Greek National Conservatory, as well as general secretary and vice-president of the Association of Greek Theater Critics and member of various boards and committees (EIRT, EOT, etc.). He served as general director with the GNO from 1970 to 1974. He is the author of the book “The dawn of refined music in Greece and the foundation of the National School” (I anatoli tis entechnis mousikis stin Ellada kai I dimiourgia tis Ethnikis Scholis) (Athens, 1980). He was awarded an honorary diploma from the Cultural Center of Constantinopolitans, as well as the Medal of the 150th Anniversary of 1821 (Greek revolution against Turkish rule), and the Medal of Merit of the Italian Republic.
