He was born in Milan in 1948. He debuted in 1977 at the International Art Workshop of Montepulciano [Cantiere d'arte di Montepulciano], designing the scenery and costumes for the opera Don Pasquale. His style is considered eclectic. His work is characterized by a perfect knowledge of the historical background; in costume design, he is equally creative and ingenious in the use of materials, with an emphasis to the quality of the colors. Of particular importance were his collaborations with the famous Italian director Luca Ronconi in the following operas: Così fan tutte (Teatro La Fenice, Venice, 1983), Orfeo, by Luigi Rossi (La Scala, Milan, 1985), Iphigénie en Tauride, by Niccolò Piccinni (Teatro Petruzzelli, Bari, 1987), Věc Makropulos (Turin, 1993), La damnation de Faust, by Berlioz (La Scala, Milan, 1995), Falstaff (Florence), Ariadne auf Naxos, and Moïse et Pharaon (La Scala, Milan). He has worked with celebrated artists and major opera houses in Italy, Europe and the USA. He has designed scenery, among others, for the operas Le nozze di Figaro (Salzburg, dir. Michael Hampe), Der Rosenkavalier (Cologne, dir. Michael Hampe, 1985) La sonnambula (Miami, dir. Renata Scotto), Orphée aux enfers (Teatro La Fenice, Venice, dir. Cobelli), Elektra (Spoleto, dir. Krämer 1990), Tosca (Cologne, dir. Tiezzi, 1998). More recently, he worked on the operas La traviata (National Theater, Tokyo), Norma (Helsinki, dir. Renata Scotto), Aida (Turin, dir. Friedkin). He has also worked as scenic designer in cinema. For the GNO, he did the scenery and costumes of the opera Turandot, staged at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in 2007-08.
