He was born in Lisbon, Portugal. He began studying under Cristina de Castro. In 1984 he debuted as Masetto [Don Giovanni] at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon. His debut was followed by many appearances as Figaro [The Marriage of Figaro/Le nozze di Figaro], Marcello [La bohème], Tadeo [The Italian Girl in Algiers/L' italiana in Algeri], Germont [The Fallen Woman/La traviata], Dandini and Alidoro [Cinderella/La Cenerentola]. In 1993 he first appeared at the Paris Opera as Figaro and at Milan’s La Scala as Falstaff. Having been awarded at the International Song Contest “Toti Dal Monte” (2010), he debuted as Leporello [Don Giovanni] in Treviso, Rovigo, and Trieste. He sings at major theaters and festivals worldwide, including the State Operas of Vienna and Berlin, the Zurich Opera, the Barbican Center (London), the Paris Opera, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Milan’s La Scala, the Turin Royal Theatre, the Theatre “La Fenice” [The Phoenix] in Venice, the Florence Opera Festival Musical May, the Sferisterio di Macerata, the Festival della Valle d’ Itria (Martina Franca) and in Salzburg. His repertoire also includes roles from the operas The Elixir of Love [L'elisir d'amore], The Barber of Seville [Il barbiere di Siviglia], Othello, Turandot, Don Pasquale, Manon Lescaut (Lescaut), The Italian Straw Hat [Il cappello di paglia di Firenze] (Nonancourt), A Turk in Italy [Il turco in Italia]. He often appears at the in Sao Carlos Theatre of Lisbon performing roles from the operas Carmen, Gianni Schicchi, Lucia di Lammermoor. He has collaborated with renowned conductors such as Abbado, Chailly, Corboz, Mehta and Muti. He collaborated once with the GNO, performing the role of Don Giovanni, directed by Yannis Kokkos (2013/14, Herodeon, Athens Festival). // Last update of the biography: December 2015.
