Georgios Helmis
Theatre Entrepreneur
He was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1891 and died in Athens in 1975. His family originated from Himarë, Northern Epirus (Albania). He studied at the Commercial School of Halki and continued his studies in London. He initially got involved in industry and commerce. In 1919 he entered the theater field and three years later he married actress Marika Kotopouli, with whom he collaborated in films, as well as at the Kotopouli Theater and Rex Theater. In the 1910s he recorded Greek songs and Byzantine hymns on 78 rpm records; some of his recordings can be found on the Internet. He held the position of General Manager of the GNO three times (1938/39, 1949 and 1957).
