Ioan Hvorov

He was born in Izmail (Ukraine) on 4/1/1928. He completed his musical training at the Conservatory of Cluj-Napoca (Romania) and studied under Grigore Melnic. He made his debut at the Opera of Cluj-Napoca in the roles of Konchak and Galitsky [Prince Igor]. He stayed on staff at that opera until 1958, when he was recruited as a soloist by the Bucharest National Opera. At the same time, he appeared in opera houses around the world, such as the Stanislavsky Theatre and the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, the National Opera in Stuttgart and Sofia, the great Paris Opera, the Opera of Liege and the Festival of Wiesbaden. His extensive repertoire ranges from Mozart to Wagner and includes over 40 roles, with particular emphasis on roles in Slavic operas, such as: Vodnik [Rusalka], Ion [The Scourge/Năpasta by Sabin Dragoi], Varlaam and Boris [Boris Godunov], Ivan Khovansky and Shaklovity [The Khovansky Affair]. He also sang leading and principal roles of the international repertoire, such as: Caspar [The Freeshooter/Der Freischütz], Méphistophélès [Faust], Timur [Turandot], Sarastro [The Magic Flute/Die Zauberflöte], Don Basilio [The Barber of Seville/Il barbiere di Siviglia], Baron Ochs [The Knight of the Rose/Der Rosenkavalier] and Frank [The Bat/Die Fledermaus]. He interpreted the role of Tiresias in the recording of the opera Oedipe by Enescu for the Romanian label Electrecord. He appeared at the GNO once, interpreting the role of Varlaam in the opera Boris Godunov (Olympia Theater, 1976/77).
