
Simeon Kogan
Conductor
He was born in Bobruisk, Ukraine on 24/04/1928. He studied violin and conducting at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. He founded the Omsk State Symphony Orchestra. In 1976 he was appointed artistic director with the Rostov State Academic Symphony Orchestra, with which he participated in Moscow’s International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1990. He has appeared with the State Orchestra of the former Soviet Union, as well as with the Philharmonic Orchestras of Moscow and St. Petersburg and the Orchestra of Radio Moscow. He was invited to conduct in Poland, former Czechoslovakia, Germany and America. His repertoire included works by Igor Stravinsky and Dmitri Shostakovich, while he conducted the world premieres of works by Soviet composers Edison Denisov, Tikhon Khrennikov and Rodion Shchedrin. He taught at the Rostov-on-Don Conservatory. He was honored for his contribution to the Russian state with the title of People's Artist of Russia. In 1995 he was appointed conductor with the Symphony Orchestra of Volos, staging concerts at the Athens Concert Hall, Herodeion, Ancient Olympia and Istanbul. He has directed works by Greek composers of various genres, such as by Dimitris Mitropoulos, Nikos Skalkotas, Manolis Kalomiris, Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Hadjidakis, Dimitris Maragopoulos and Thanos Mikroutsikos. He participated in the recorded version of Instead of a dream [Antis gia oneiro] (2004 Cultural Olympiad), conducting the Orchestra of Volos in works by Greek composers (Labelet, Carrer, Padovanis, Rodotheatos, Axiotis, Nezeritis). He worked with the GNO as conductor in the opera productions of John Gay’s The Beggar's Opera (1996/97) and Kurt Weill’s The Threepenny Opera [Die Dreigroschenoper] (1998/99).
