Stefanos Lazaridis

Set Designer
Born in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia on 28/7/1942 of Greek parents. He studied in Addis Ababa and at the International School of Geneva [Ecole Internationale de Genève]. He continued his studies at the Central School of Speech and Drama London and with the designer Nicholas Georgiadis. He was invited by director John Copley to create the stage design of the production Carmen for the Sadler’s Wells Opera. His new scenography for Carmen with director Steven Pimlott was praised as "a milestone in the brilliant popularization of opera" (1989). He collaborated mainly with the directors John Copley and David Pountney designing the sets for more than 30 productions for the English National Opera [ENO], many of which were awarded (1970-2000). He created the stage designs for productions directed by Pountney at the Bregenzer Festspiel: The Flying Dutchman [Der fliegende Holländer], Fidelio, Nabucco (1989-95). He supervised the Duran Duran rock show on tour in the USA. (1993-1994). He designed sets for the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Theatre of Europe [Théâtre de l'Europe] and Royal Ballet of England. He worked with leading directors and opera houses in Europe, USA, Japan, Australia. He designed the sets for director Keith Warner for the Beirut Festival Lohengrin,(1999) and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (The Ring of the Nibelung / Der Ring des Nibelungen, 2004-06). He was awarded repeatedly: Olivier Award, German Critics Award, Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space etc. He was artistic director of the Greek National Opera from January 2006 until June 2007, modernizing the productions and repertoire of the opera. He passed away in London on 05/08/2010.
