Colin Lee

Soloist, Tenor
He was born in Cape Town, South Africa. He studied voice in London under tenor Jeffrey Talbot (1994 onwards). He debuted in 2011 at the Cape Town Opera as Alfredo (La traviata). At the same time, he gave his first song recital, accompanied by pianist Albie van Schalkwyk. He reappered at the Cape Town Opera in 2013 as Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor) under Richard Bonynge. He made his La Scala Milan debut in 2014. He has excelled in bel canto roles, such as: Tonio (La fille du Regiment, Royal Opera House London) and Count Almaviva (Il barbiere di Siviglia), a role which he performed for the first time at the English National Opera (2003) and since then sang for over 80 times in opera houses around the world (Metropolitan Opera New York, Paris Opera, Vienna State Opera, Berlin State Opera, etc.). His repertoire includes: Elvino (La sonnambula, Bolshoi Theatre, 2013), Argirio (Tancredi, Vienna Theatre in collaboration with René Jacobs, 2010), Rodrigo (La donna del lago, Palais Garnier, Paris), Nadir (Les pêcheurs de perles), Ernesto (Don Pasquale), Nemorino (L' elisir d'amore), Tamino (Die zauberflöte), Lindoro (L' Italiana in Algeri), Fenton (Falstaff), as well as roles in works by Rameau, Berlioz, Strauss and Britten. He has made 11 recordings at Opera Rara (as Oreste in Ermione, which won the 2011 Gramophone Award for Best Opera Recording, as Gerardo in Donizetti’s Caterina Cornaro, etc.).
